Environmentally Friendly Willow Baskets – Handmade with Love
The love of basket weaving evolved in Emma because of her passion to help people. As a direct result of her own cancer journey in 2007 she began to realise that Nature was at the root of all healing, so she decided to sell her house in 2012 and buy some land on the Blackdown Hills on the Devon and Somerset borders. It is there that she began creating a nature based healing retreat, Satori. Making baskets from willow seemed a perfect Nature Based Craft to help bring about Wellbeing.
Basket weaving is one of the world’s oldest crafts. Since 2015 Emma has been studying basket making with the English Master craftsman Ivor Hancock to learn some of his exacting techniques. He has been weaving for over 70 years! Emma is driven to pass these skills on to future generations.
To support local cottage industry Emma uses willow sourced from the Somerset Levels, once a thriving hub for growing osiers and making all sorts of basketry such as coffins, tables, even aeroplane seats!!
As well as accepting individual commissions and teaching weaving workshops Emma sells her unique baskets at craft shows, festivals, talks and demonstrations, as well as in her local shop where an ‘alternative to plastic bags’ is encouraged.
